Brain health is all the buzz these days. Trust me. People are at their local health food stores purchasing supplement after supplement as a way to restore or prevent the decline of their own brain health. I absolutely get it. We want to live longer and stronger and enjoy a life full of vitality well into our latter years. Knowing this we search for, yet again, that magic pill. I often think to myself, okay this is good, but I sure hope they realize supplements will never replace:
adequate nutrients from quality food
quality sleep
daily movement for blood flow
heavy metal detoxes (heavy metals that get into your blood stream can flow to the brain and lodge themselves there, potentially impacting the development of various brain and nervous system health issues such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinsons Disease
Adding a smoothie full of brain boosting ingredients is a tasty way to start improving your brain and body health. I find them to be an easy way to get several health promoting ingredients into one simple serving! They are easy on the digestive tract and allow for easier absorption of key vitamins and minerals into the blood stream more efficiently. Knowing this, it can make for the perfect breakfast option for those who generally do not like to eat breakfast or have a ton of time. Smoothie ingredients can be prepped the night before so you can just throw them into a blender and then pour into a thermos to take with you on your drive to work!
Smoothies for breakfast is what I recommend to my gut healing and adrenal recovering clients simply because low energy is one of their biggest complaints when they first see me. However, I am always helping my clients discover what works best for them. For some it may be eggs and for others it may be smoothies. I always keep an open mind as should you.
Recipe
[Makes 1-2 servings]
1 cup unsweetened almond, coconut, hemp, or rice milk
1 small frozen banana
3 kale leaves (discard the tough center stalk and use only the leaves)
3 romaine lettuce leaves
1/4 cup of goji berries or blueberries
1 teaspoon hemp seeds
1 teaspoon flax seed meal or chia seeds
1 teaspoon bee pollen (optional)
Ice (optional)
Add your milk to the blender cup. Add your frozen banana, kale, lettuce leaves. Blend until smooth. Add the remaining ingredients and blend until your ingredients are smooth.
This smoothie recipe is packed with ingredients high in healthy fats and Omega 3's, which are necessary for optimal brain functioning. Hemp seeds are my new favorite obsession because of the amount of nutrition they provide in such a tiny seed. All the ingredients in this smoothie are anti-inflammatory in nature and help balance our hormones leading to a body and brain in balance!
