Maintaining healthy blood sugar levels is crucial for overall well-being. Blood sugar, or glucose, is the primary source of energy for the body's cells. It comes from the foods we eat, particularly carbohydrates, and is transported through the bloodstream to various cells to provide energy. The body regulates blood sugar levels using insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas.
Problems arise when blood sugar becomes chronically elevated. This, unfortunately, is becoming more and more common even among children. Understanding why maintaining healthy blood sugar levels is important is the first step in preventing or reversing the issue.
Let’s take a look at exactly why we want to keep our blood sugar optimally balanced.
1. Energy Regulation
Maintaining healthy blood sugar levels is essential for sustained energy throughout the day. When blood sugar levels are too high or too low, it can lead to fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.
2. Preventing Chronic Diseases
Consistently high blood sugar levels can lead to various chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Managing blood sugar levels helps reduce the risk of these conditions and promote long-term health.
3. Weight Management
Stable blood sugar levels can help with weight management by reducing cravings and preventing overeating. When blood sugar levels are balanced, it is easier to maintain a healthy weight and avoid obesity-related complications.
4. Mental Health
Fluctuating blood sugar levels can affect mood and cognitive function. Stable blood sugar levels contribute to better mental clarity, reduced anxiety, and improved overall mood.
5. Protecting Vital Organs
High blood sugar levels can damage vital organs, including the heart, kidneys, and eyes. By managing blood sugar levels, you can protect these organs from damage and maintain their proper function.
There are some great Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM) on the market that will allow you to monitor your blood sugar for up to 10 days. This is the best way to discover what foods/meals work best for you as well as against you. Two companies are Stelo or Dexcom. Once you have the facts, you will be able to create meals that will move you toward a path of wellness rather than “dis-ease.”
