Makeover Your Skincare Products

Far too many women are walking around with hormonal imbalances wreaking havoc on their every day quality of life, especially imbalanced estrogen. What we often don’t realize is the impact our choice of beauty products has on our hormonal health. Avoiding toxic skincare and make up that have ingredients known to increase estrogen levels and, therefore, increasing the risk of hormone related cancers, is more important than we may think. It gets so confusing and expensive if we don’t have the right guidance and information available. That’s what I want to help you with, so read on my friends!

When it comes to choosing skincare products, we have thousands of options. Peels, scrubs, cleansers, serums, oils, toners, spot treatments, masks, and creams take up multiple isles in the drug stores, and as a result, it’s easy to go a little overboard, especially if you’re desperate to clear up your skin.

Here’s something I want you to remember—you are not a dermatologist. Before you reach for the ‘extra-strength’ cream to go on top of the salicylic acid cleanser and dab on a retinol treatment every night, take the time to do some research. Find out whether all those products should be used together and if you even should be using them in the first place!

One thing I’d also like to address here is the common misconception that your skin should be OIL-FREE. We’ve been socialized to believe that oil creates acne, but inreality, oil keeps our skin moisturized and healthy. A good amount of sebum or oil is necessary for creating a protective barrier for the skin. So even if you’re struggling with acne, be sure to keep your skin moisturized, and don’t be afraid of adding an oil-based serum to your routine. Jojoba oil, rosehip oil, and any other non-comedogenic oil can actually be extremely helpful if you have dry patches or combination skin.

Also, keep in mind that everyone’s skin is different. What might be a ‘miracle product’ for one person might make another person break out. Be aware of the way your skin reacts to new products, and try to only add one new product into your skincare routine at a time so that you can gauge what could be causing issues, should they arise.

While I won’t be recommending any specific products, I will say that from my experience I know that a gentle, regular exfoliation coupled with a moisturizer are perhaps two of the most important parts in keeping the top layers of your skin happy.
